The Seascaper is pleased to announce that the ASMC President's Cup Champion for 2018 is John Schenone.
John won this prestigious year-end championship match against Jeff Stanga up two holes with one to play. It was a remarkable round of golf for John Schenone as he carded a net 66 which included 3 net birdies, 7 net pars, and 4 net bogies, fairing better than the 7 pars and 7 bogies included on Jeff's card. Some of John's highlights were gross pars on four of the five par 3's; dropping a 24' foot put for par to halve #11; and, sinking a 15' putt for par to win hole #15.
Congratulations John on a match well played!

Brief of Proposed New Event: “The President’s Cup”
This new ASMC competition is intended to encourage greater participation in ASMC tournaments through the potential of gaining acceptance into a season-ending elite match play competition that will culminate with the winner of The President’s Cup. By nature, this will further stimulate the competitive desires of our members as well as add excitement to the end of season events.
The following are suggested format and details, which are to be discussed and refined as deemed so by the ASMC Board of Directors.
Format: Match Play tournament consisting of the top 16 final ranked players as ranked by the ASMC Player of the Year standings.
Brackets: Players shall be seeded by final Player of the Year standing (1 plays 16, 2 plays 15, etc.)
Schedule: Play shall begin on 4 October and be concluded by 14 November. Specific time between matches TBD, but should be no longer than 10 days. Round 1 shall be on Wednesday 4 October in consecutive tee times.
Fees: No fees shall be charged the participants. This is intended to be a reward for those qualified.
Awards: An engraved Cup shall be awarded to the winner by the ASMC Board of Directors. (Considering a perpetual trophy with each year’s winner’s name on it. Need a place in the clubhouse to keep it.)
This competition is expected to require some administration but should be designed to not be a burden.
Some considerations:
- The current Player of the Year award shall remain in place as is. So, a member could achieve an ASMC Grand Slam, whether it be a same year or career slam. That would be winning a Flight Championship for the Spring Medal tournament, winning a Flight Championship for the Club Championship tournament, Player of the Year Award, and winning The President’s Cup.
- Brackets would need to be established and posted.
- Posting the brackets on the board per usual and an email to the affected winning players to begin scheduling their next match within the time limit of completion. Communication on match play results will be important for notifying players to initiate tee times for their next match with deadlines known.
- Suggestion, it would be great to also have the bracket and results posted on our website. This would drive more players to use our website and be up to date on The President’s Cup matches. This may encourage viewership by members. Email blasts to all members on results would enhance this.
- Once a player advances, the next time period for scheduling his next match shall begin when his next opponent advances. Thus, if two players that are slated to potentially play each other advance before the 10 days has expired, then their 10 days to finish their match begins immediately upon the completion of the last match of that grouping. This would keep the event moving along quicker.
- We will need a tie-breaker process for determining the top 16 players and in rank order. Recommend the following: 1) Points earned in September Club Championship; 2) Points earned in April Spring Medal; 3) Sum of points earned in last three ASMC tournaments (July, August, Sept); 4} last 6 tournaments; 5) last 9 ASMC tournaments.

New Rules
Amongst the many rules of golf, some rules are familiar to all. For example, we all know you have five minutes to find your ball before it is deemed lost. We also know that it is a penalty to putt from the green and hit the flag pin. And definitely, don't ground your club in a red staked area.
Yes. Well, that's all changing soon. The USGA has been busy rethinking many of the rules of golf. In many cases, the changes they've come up with are designed to make the game more fun and speed up play. In 2019 we will all be playing by these updated rules, so get the jump on the competition and find out what's going to change. You can find 36 new rules at the USGA website.

NCGA Rules!
On Saturday morning, ASMC Men's Club hosted an on-course rules seminar attended by our members as well as women from The Sea Gals. The 3-hour event was led by NCGA Rules specialists, Ray Coates of Redwood City and Lynne Gangi of San Jose.
The customized course covered several topics including play on and around greens, relief from temporary and permanant obstructions, playing options in and around the bunker, water hazards, rules affecting the teeing ground, starting times and scoring.
The format was casual and upbeat, The co-leaders invited questions throughout the seminar and the members didn't dissapoint. The Q&A was lively and the NCGA representatives were kept on their toes.
Attendees were given copies of the USGA 2018 Rules book and a convenient bag tag summarizing the most common rules and resulting penalties if broken.
Thanks to Bill Miller, ASMC Rules Director for organizing the event and to Ray Coates & Lynne Gangi for leading a superb event.

Bob Alustiza Get's an Ace on 16!
Bob "Bob-O-Matic" Alustiza recorded a hole in one on the 16th hole at Seascape! On April 2nd, Bob grabbed his trusty 3 hybrid and zeroed in on a blue flag on the 16th hole. After 50 years of trying, Bob finally found the bottom of the cup. The boys in the bar were thankful, and thirsty!

Jeff Stanga's First Ace
On March 27th, Jeff Stanga recorded his first ace on the 16th hole at Seascape! Jeff used his 3 hybrid shooting at a blue pin that was about 176 yards out. He said "I thought I pulled out a 4 hybrid but when I put the club back in I noticed it was a 3. Would have been well short!".
The Seascaper salutes you and wishes you continued luck in your club selection (or lack thereof).
