Barry Baker's First Ace

On Tuesday August 30th long time ASMC member Barry Baker got his first career hole in one on hole number 12.  Barry used a nine iron to the 118 yard red pin which was tucked behind the right bunker.  One bounce and in.  Barry was playing with Craig Matthews, Bob Twaddle and John Deworken.

Summer Social 2011

“Summer Time and the Living is Easy, Fish are Jumping, and the Cotton is High”

Find your favorite golfing partner and sign up for the ASMC Summer Social to be held at 3:00pm on Friday September 16.

Back by popular demand we will be using the two person Chapman Scotch Alternating Shot format.  This will be a 9 hole shotgun start.  We will participate in a golf skills game at 3:00pm on the practice green.  We will then move to our tee assignments and proceed to play.

Two person teams.  Each golfer will tee off.  For the second shot you will play from your partners drive.  After the second shot the team will decide which ball is the best for the third shot.  From the third shot to the hole one ball will be played by alternating who hits the shot.  This will be played with full handicap and prizes will be awarded to the top three team net scores.

Following golf we will be having a wonderful summer BBQ and will announce prizes for the low net teams and skills winners.

Cost will be $25 per member plus cart fee (where applicable) and $55 per non-member cart included.

Sign up sheets will be on the Men’s and Women’s bulletin boards at the club or you can sign up by sending an email to ASMCGolf@gmail.com and simply put “Summer Social 2011” in the subject line and say sign me up along with your partner’s name if you have one.

Payment is to be made by check only, and made out to ASMC.  You can leave your check with the Pro Shop and tell them it is for the Summer Social.  Payment prior to the day of the tournament is greatly appreciated.  If you are planning to pay the day of the tournament please arrive a little early.

ASMC Summer Social 2011

To all interested parties, members and non-members alike, mark your calendars for Friday September 16 when we will be holding our second annual ASMC Summer Social.

Back by popular demand we will use the Chapman Scotch alternating shot format which we played last summer.  There will be a skills challenge on the putting green at 3:00PM followed by a nine hole shotgun at 4:00PM.  After a blistering round of alternating shot there will be a scrumptious BBQ in the clubhouse along with happy hour bar pricing all evening.

ASMC Raises and Matches Funds for Japan Disaster Relief

The Aptos Seascape Men's Club has sent $1,790 to United Way of Santa Cruz to be donated to the Akaihane Central Community Chest of Japan for their Disaster Relief Fund for Victims. Aikahane is part of the worldwide United Way network.

Over the last few months, ASMC collected donations from our members to support relief efforts for victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  The ASMC Board of Directors authorized that the club would match funds collected to  help support disaster relief efforts.

It is the board's hope that in some small way, our donation will help to alleviate the suffering on the many victims of this terrible natural disaster that struck Japan March 12.

Interclub Match Play Update

Seascape's Interclub team won their first match against Sunnyvale at Seascape 27-9.

Unfortunately, the team lost the scond match at Palo Alto, 28-8.

Team Play Finals

Bob Tomasi and Phil Trounstine defeated Jim Geesman and Tony Riccabona in the finals of the Team Match Play Tournament 1 up on the 28th! hole last week. Their match never wavered more than 1 hole over the first 18 holes, moving to sudden death that didn't end until No. 10, the second time around.

Tomasi and Trounstine made the finals by defeating Bob McCormick and Bill Campbell while Geesman and Riccabona earned their finals berth by overcoming Gary Gogol and Mike Oliver.

Charlie Hood: A Great Friend, Competitor and ASMC Leader

As many of you may already know, Charlie Hood, longtime beloved ASMC member, passed away on Saturday, June 11th. Charlie was an active member of ASMC, for many years serving on the Board of Directors, and also serving as Handicap Chairman and Tournament Chairman. 

Charlie was an avid ambassador for the club and wonderful story teller and a wicked competitor. We'll never forget his famous answer when you had a putt that was just outside the leather: You'd ask, "Is that good?" and he would reply, "It's not bad."

There will be a Celebration of Life to share memories of Charlie at Dominican Oaks, 3400 Paul Sweet Rd., Santa Cruz at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25th.

Charlie's family has asked that donations in his name be made to ASMC in support of the Junior Golf program. As such, we will set up a donation station at the July tournament for those who wish to donate in Charlie's name. All the money collected, along with the club's annual donation to Junior Golf, will be donated in Charlie's name.
